Caring for solid wood furniture

Solid wood is a natural material that responds to its surroundings. A few simple habits can help it stay looking good for many years. Always check the care instructions provided for your specific finish first.

Clean gently

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For marks, use a cloth that is only slightly damp, then dry the surface straight away. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads and silicone-based sprays, which can damage some finishes or make future refinishing harder.

Protect from heat and spills

Use coasters, placemats and trivets under hot dishes and drinks. Wipe up spills promptly, especially water, wine and oils. Avoid leaving damp items such as plant pots directly on the surface.

Mind the light

Direct sunlight can change the colour of wood over time — some species lighten, others darken. Moving decorative objects occasionally helps avoid uneven patches. Curtains or blinds can reduce strong sunlight at the hottest part of the day.

Keep humidity steady

Wood naturally expands and contracts as humidity changes. Large swings can lead to small movements or, in extreme cases, cracks. Try to keep furniture away from radiators, heaters, fireplaces and air-conditioning vents, and avoid very damp or very dry conditions where you can.

Refresh oiled finishes

Oiled surfaces may benefit from occasional re-oiling, typically when the wood starts to look dry or water no longer beads on the surface. Use a product compatible with the original finish, follow the manufacturer's instructions and ventilate the room. Dispose of oily rags safely according to the product label, as some oils can self-heat.

Lift, don't drag

When moving furniture, lift it rather than dragging it, and use felt pads under legs to protect both the piece and your floor.
